The discussion about building operations increased substantially in June prompting us to create a separate category. In May this topic was covered within the “Buildings & cities for a next normal” and the discussion about operational technologies was included in the 6.c subcategory of “Smart buildings” within “Adoption of new technologies”.

Approximately 12% of the selected June references mentions building operations. For example: “How IoT and AI can enable companies to restart their business during COVID-19” [161]; “FIFIO Week 1: People, Buildings, and Anxiety” [389]; Realcomm’s webinar series “Real Estate Data Management and Analytics Series” [444][445][446][447]. ASHRAE: COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Preparedness Resources [601] including guidance for all building types: healthcare facilities [603] [601], residential buildings [604], multifamily building owners/managers [605]; commercial [607], reopening schools and universities [608][609]

ASHRAE recommends:” Ventilation and filtration provided by heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems can reduce the airborne concentration of SARS-CoV-2 and thus the risk of transmission through the air. Unconditioned spaces can cause thermal stress to people that may be directly life threatening and that may also lower resistance to infection. In general, disabling of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems is not a recommended measure to reduce the transmission of the virus.[601] Research institutions such as Lawrence Berkeley National laboratory are conducting research on the indoor virus transmissions.
