AbstractThis paper describes a layout generation project which emphasizes the potential for using knowledge-based methods in architectural layout generation. This project focuses on the development of a heuristic-based layout generation system which works in cooperation with a designer to produce conceptual layouts. It is intended that the system will complement the expertise of the designer by using experiential knowledge provided by the designer, in conjunction with its own knowledge base, to generate conceptual layouts. The project incorporates several objectives including the development of a model for the representation of layout knowledge and information, the identification of heuristics used by designers during layout conceptualization, and the implementation of a control structure which facilitates the generation of knowledge-based layouts. The paper will address these objectives through a description of the overall layout generation project and a detailed explanation of the knowledge model developed in the initial project stages.
