POP-driven Assessment of XR-use in AEC

Title Picture POP Framework

Research Team

Our Motivation:

“My research objective is to evaluate the impact of XR implementations on design and construction projects. During interviews with Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry practitioners, I identified that AEC companies would like to use XR to improve project outcomes. However, haphazard use of XR without considering criteria and metrics, does not result in successful implementations. With this seed project, I aim to address this gap by providing a method to assess XR implementations.”

Icon Contribution

Research Contribution

  1. Define POP-based qualitative and quantitative criteria for XR impact
  2. Develop a method to assess XR implementation

For the following use cases:

VR for design review
AR/MR for field inspection

Problem

Practical Problem

Before deciding on full-scale implementation of XR at the corporate level, AEC companies conduct XR experiments and pilot studies.

Currently, they lack methods to consider the holistic impact of XR implementations on their use cases. This results in project team members questioning whether XR will add value to the project.

Conceptual Problem

The lack of XR assessment method leads to unstructured, inconsistent, and incomplete analysis of XR experiments and pilot studies.

Icon Solution

Solution

Develop a method with the use of qualitative and quantitative criteria. This method assesses how XR implementations impact the POP aspects of AEC projects:

Product: Quality of as-built BIM and building

Organization: Profitable for the company, valuable for
the project, and useful for the task

Process: Efficiency of project workflow
