Our Motivation:

“In my last role as an owner’s representative, I couldn’t find a ready reference of metrics which I could use to guide my project team regarding day-to-day actions. Without the “right” metrics during run time, the project ran the risk of falling off-track.

Other industries, such as manufacturing, have standard lists of metrics available. In order to establish such a list for the AEC industry, it is first important to understand what AEC professionals are finding useful to track. The similarities and differences in production metrics reported can assist AEC professionals in managing their projects using the “right” metrics, making it more likely for their projects to stay on track."

Research Contribution

A curated dataset of production metrics reported by 600 AEC professionals implementing VDC on different types of projects.

Similarities and differences in production metrics reported by project type, size, duration and phase.

Problem

Practical Problem

Tracking the “right”production metrics makes it more likely for AEC professionals to complete projects on time and budget.

However, there is no common understanding of the “right” production
metrics, which leads to

a) Project teams reinventing the wheel every time

b) Risk of projects falling off-track

Conceptual Problem

There is no common understanding of which production metrics are useful for AEC professionals.

Icon Solution

Solution

Top 10 (most commonly used) production metrics used by 600 AEC professionals on projects of different types (building, infrastructure) and size.

Icon added value

Added Value For The Industry

Supports decision making within project teams by assisting them with establishing production metrics.

Supports organizations in standardizing production metrics across projects.

Provides a common vocabulary for production metrics which can be used across the industry for comparison and benchmarking.
